Google Merchant Center Setup Guide: Step by Step
Google Merchant Center Setup Guide: Step by Step
Google Shopping Ads drive some of the highest ROAS in e-commerce advertising. But before you can run Shopping campaigns, you need Google Merchant Center set up correctly with a clean product feed. This guide walks you through everything.
What Is Google Merchant Center?
Google Merchant Center (GMC) is the platform where you upload your product data so it can appear in Google Shopping results, free product listings, and Shopping ad campaigns. Think of it as the bridge between your store and Google’s shopping experience.
Step 1: Create Your Merchant Center Account
- Go to merchants.google.com
- Sign in with your Google account
- Enter your business name, country, and time zone
- Verify and claim your website URL (options: HTML tag, Google Analytics, Google Tag Manager, or DNS record)
Pro tip: If you already have Google Ads, link the accounts during setup. You’ll need this connection to run Shopping campaigns later.
Step 2: Configure Business Settings
Before uploading products, configure these settings:
- Shipping — set up shipping rates by region, weight, or order value. Accurate shipping info prevents disapprovals.
- Tax settings — configure sales tax for states where you collect it (US) or VAT settings (EU).
- Return policy — add your return policy URL. This builds trust and is required for some Shopping features.
Step 3: Create Your Product Feed
Your product feed is a file containing all your product data. Required fields include:
| Field | Description | Example |
|---|---|---|
| id | Unique product identifier | SKU-12345 |
| title | Product name (max 150 chars) | Blue Running Shoes - Men’s Size 10 |
| description | Product description | Lightweight running shoes with mesh upper… |
| link | Product page URL | https://yourstore.com/blue-shoes |
| image_link | Main product image URL | https://yourstore.com/images/blue-shoes.jpg |
| price | Product price with currency | 79.99 USD |
| availability | Stock status | in_stock |
| brand | Brand name | Nike |
| gtin | Global Trade Item Number | 0123456789012 |
Feed Submission Methods
- Scheduled fetch — GMC pulls a feed file from your server at regular intervals
- Content API — programmatic updates in real time (best for large catalogs)
- Manual upload — upload a spreadsheet (only suitable for small catalogs)
- Platform integration — Shopify, WooCommerce, and others have direct GMC connectors
Step 4: Optimize Your Product Titles
Product titles are the single biggest factor in Shopping ad performance. Optimize them using this formula:
Brand + Product Type + Key Attributes (color, size, material)
Bad: “Running Shoes” Good: “Nike Air Zoom Pegasus 41 - Men’s Running Shoes - Blue/White”
For e-commerce automation, use feed rules in GMC to automatically restructure titles across your entire catalog.
Step 5: Fix Feed Errors and Warnings
After submitting your feed, check the Diagnostics tab. Common issues:
- Missing GTIN — add GTINs for all branded products; use
identifier_exists = falsefor custom or handmade items - Blurry or watermarked images — use clean, high-resolution product photos
- Price mismatch — your feed price must match your website price exactly
- Missing shipping info — ensure shipping is configured for all target countries
Step 6: Launch Shopping Campaigns
Once your feed is approved, create your first Shopping campaign in Google Ads:
- Link your Merchant Center account to Google Ads
- Create a new Shopping or Performance Max campaign
- Set your daily budget and target ROAS
- Structure product groups by category, brand, or margin level
For ongoing optimization, see our guide on improving your ROAS.
